The meteorological agency said the cold snap was likely to last until Thursday, with snowfalls of up to 70 centimeters expected in northern Japan and western areas facing the Sea of Japan. In 24 hours to early Tuesday some 84 centimeters of snow had fallen in Otaru on the northern island of Hokkaido, the agency said.
