Yeltsin said the russian Interior Ministry troops and special forces following the convoy were "sufficient" if the rebels "use violence against the hostages." The rebels left Kizlyar, about 10 kilometres from Chechnya, in a convoy of 11 buses and two trucks with up to 165 hostages acting as human shields. The rebels, numbering around 250 according to Dagestani officials, had released most of the 2,000 hostages they had held at a hospital in the town.
