P51f 517 TELEINF SPORTS 13:12:02 One of the reasons the whales were moved was so they would not call other whales to the beach from a pod estimated to number up to 100 which had been sighted offshore. It was the first time in 20 years that more than one melon-headed whale had been found beached in Australia. Officials conducted blood tests to establish that the whales' stress levels were low and that they were strong enough to endure a rescue attempt. The mammals were being taken by boat about 12 kilometres out to sea and then released. It was possible that bad weather had driven the whales towards the coastline and, had the injured juvenile beached first, its distress calls could have drawn the others.
